Terry Moore - President
As Chief Executive Officer of New Zealand's largest national private surgical hospital group, Terry's role incorporates the leadership, strategic direction and operational management of Southern Cross' ten not-for-profit hospitals. He also plays a major role in the management of the numerous joint venture partnerships that complete a growing hospital network. Terry was elected President of NZPSHA in September 2008.
Prior to his current appointment, Terry's eight year career with the company has seen him hold several senior positions, including Chief Financial Officer for the Southern Cross Healthcare Group.
From 1988 - 1998, Terry held a variety of influential financial and commercial roles in the Public Healthcare sector.
Julie McCarthy - Vice-President
Julie McCarthy is CEO of Chelsea Hospital Trust in Gisborne. She has over 20 years international health experience and in 2010 graduated in Australia with an MBA. Her career has spanned the public and private sector where she has worked in hospital and community services both as a clinician and senior health manager.
Prior to her current role, Julie was on the senior management team of Tairawhiti District Health Board, responsible for mental health services which included inpatient care, community, crisis intervention, alcohol and drug addiction services.
Julie was initially seconded onto the executive of the NZPSHA in 2006 to spearhead the development of the Association's Strategic Plan. She was subsequently elected by the membership and has held the role of Vice President since 2009. As part of her executive duties she participates on the National ACC Sector Liaison Working Group and has represented the private health sector on the working party that developed the New Zealand Policy for the Management of Healthcare Incidents. In addition she has initiated and coordinated the establishment of the NZPSHA 'Leaders in Quality Awards'. These awards have proven to be highly regarded and provide a platform for the sector to share good practice and promote quality service provision.
Andrew Wong
Andrew Wong, Chief Executive Officer of MercyAscot Hospitals. Andrew returned from Australia and started in October 2002. He is a qualified medical practitioner with a post grad Masters in Public Health, and a fellow of the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine.
Andrew had an early association with the Ascot Hospital when in 1999 he was part of the commissioning team. In 1999 Andrew relocated to Australia to take up the position of Managing Director of a hospital group that ran day surgery, rehab as well as inpatient medical and surgical services.
Not only has Andrew worked in the private sector he also spent five years on the Management Team at South Auckland Health.
Andrew is currently the Chief Executive of MercyAscot as well as Chairman of Auckland Radiation Oncology and a director of radiology, angiography and medical tourism companies. Andrew has been on the Executive of NZPSHA (and its predecessor NZPHA) since 2003.
Andrew Blair
Andrew is Chief Executive of Wakefield Health Limited which owns and operates Wakefield Hospital and Bowen Hospital in Wellington, and Royston Hospital in Hastings. Wakefield Health also owns 60% of Grace Hospital, Tauranga, and 30% of both Endoscopy Auckland Limited and Laparoscopy Auckland Limited, and Andrew is a Director on the Board of each of those businesses.
In 1998 Andrew was elected President of the NZ Private Hospitals Association (NZPHA) and was re-elected to that position for each of the following 6 years until he retired as President in 2004. Andrew continues to serve on the Executive of the NZPSHA.
Prior to becoming involved in hospital management, Andrew had a lengthy career with the New Zealand Government in various roles with the Department of Justice and Department of Internal Affairs. He served at the New Zealand Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva from 1979 to 1982, and has been Private Secretary to the New Zealand Ministers of Justice, Trade & Industry and Health, and from 1984 to 1989 was Private Secretary to the Deputy Prime Minister and then the Prime Minister.
Tony Hunter
Tony Hunter has been the Chief Executive Officer of St George's Hospital, Christchurch for the twenty years and has been an Executive member of the New Zealand Private Hospitals Association and more recently the New Zealand Private Surgical Hospitals Association for eighteen years.
Tony was the inaugural President of the New Zealand Private Surgical Hospitals Association when it reformed after separating from the aged care sector in 2005.
Prior to joining St George's Hospital, Tony worked for the Command Services Group of Companies for 10 years in a number of roles, the most recent of which was their Development Manager for Australasia. This position had the responsibility of growing and developing the Company's business throughout New Zealand and Australia.
Tony's first introduction into the health industry was during the period 1974 - 1978 when he worked for the Canterbury Area Health Board in a Management Services role. In total he has over thirty four years of Hospital and Health Industry experience.
Carey Campbell
Carey is the Chief Nurse Advisor for the Southern Cross Hospitals network – a position she has held since October 2008. Prior to this she held a variety of clinical, education and nursing leadership roles at Waikato District Health Board.
Carey completed her initial nursing training at Waikato Technical Institute (currently Wintec), gained her BN through Massey University and more latterly a Post-Graduate Diploma in Health Leadership and Management and a Master in Health Practice at Auckland University of Technology. Her dissertation involved an evidence-based practice approach to the topic of "Early Warning Scoring Systems: Do they improve care?".
Carey has a keen interest in quality systems and processes as well a passion for promoting and advancing nursing practice and the nursing profession. She was a member of a winning team at the 2007 New Zealand Health Innovation Awards for implementation of nurse-led preadmission processes.
She was appointed as Chair of the NZPSHA Directors of Nursing group in September 2009 and a member of the Executive in September 2010. She is a member of Nurse Executives of New Zealand (NENZ), the joint regional co-ordinator for the Waikato branch of the College of Nurses Aotearoa and also acts as a Nursing Council of New Zealand assessor and panel member for Nurse Practitioner assessment panels.
Richard Whitney

Rose Geden
Rose was appointed as Executive Director of the New Zealand Private Surgical Hospitals Association Inc. in October 2007.
Previous roles held include Executive Officer of the NZ College of Physiotherapy Inc, positions in continuing medical education and vocational education at the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners and contract work. Rose is based in the Association’s office in Wellington, co-located with the Health Funds Association of New Zealand.
